Death to the malls

Could you go without buying any new clothes for a year? A new online group has been created to achieve just that. The group has developed a project that focuses on the consumptive habits of the average consumer.

The ‘American Apparel Diet’ (note: has no connection to American Apparel Store) challenges members to avoid buying any new clothing for a year. Members can join at any time and test their ability to be weaned off their consumption addictions.

The challenge is to break the ‘buying’ habit and replace it with an approach of ‘make do and mend’ (which is proving harder than first conceived, as some members have been cheating, i.e. accepting clothing purchased by friends and family…).

Given the over consumption disease, one can wonder if a “clothing diet” will really change our usual purchasing desires.
