Veja Project Part 1: An ounce of Amazonia

From Amazonia to your sole: The Veja sole making process....

Veja works with a cooperative of Seringueiros in the heart of the Amazon. It is the only place in the world where hevea trees (i.e. trees that give rubber) grow in the wild. The latex extracted from the trees then has to be transformed to make a trainer sole. The University of Brasilia has developed a transformation process named the FDL process. It allows Seringueiros to turn latex into rubber sheets directly from their housing in the forest. Veja buys this rubber according to fair-trade principles. The rubber can then be sent to the factory to shape soles.
